2008 Mokihana Fun Meet Friday, 8/15/08 Thanks to Aunty Malia, Team PCA made quite a statement with their custom made shirts from the Honolulu Airport to Waimea, Kauai. The swimmers were proud to tell everyone who asked that they were swimmers from Pearl City in Kauai for the Mokihana Fun Meet. After having breakfast at Dani's in Lihue, Team PCA checked out the Waimea Pool and then stopped by Ishihara's Market to pick up some ono-licous bento. Then it was time to take on the treacherous drive up to the Waimea Canyon lookout.....on a road only the Kauai locals take up to the mountain. The swimmers compared the drive to a roller coaster ride and after nearly 30 minutes of screaming and laughter, the team arrived at the lookout. The view of the canyon was breathtaking! After chowing down on their bentos, Team PCA headed back towards Lihue to spend the night at Kauai Sands in Kapaa. Dinner was at Bull Shed next door....Prime Rib! Yum! Saturday, 8/16/08 Team PCA woke up to the many cries of the Kauai roosters. The wild chickens seemed to have taken over the entire island. After a quick breakfast at good ol' McDonald's, Team PCA arrived at the Waimea Pool ready to take on the swimmers from Mokihana, Maui, Oahu and California. Aimee made quite a statement being a 9 year old fast enough to beat some of the 14-15 year olds from Mokihana and Coto de Caza Coyotes from California. After quite a few 1st place finishes by Team PCA, the swimmers participated in a Breaststroke Clinic by Dr. Chris Woo (gold medal Olympian). Then it was off to JoJo's Anuenue for some well deserved shaved ice! For those that can handle, you have to try the Super Li Hing Mui flavor! "Broke da mouth!" Back at the hotel, the swimmers got together to practice their team cheer and dance to compete in the Team Spirit/Cheer Competition. Dinner on Saturday was at the Wailua Family Restaurant....just like Sizzler's. Lucky for the team, it was their last night before closing for good and there was more food out on the salad bar! Sunday, 8/17/08 Team PCA proved to be a winning team! After winning several more blue, 1st place rosette ribbons during the morning swimming session, Team PCA participated in a team spirit/cheering competition. Team PCA, with only 6 swimmers, tied with the Coto de Caza Coyotes (over 15 swimmers strong). Since there was only 1 prize, the teams had to do a cheer off to determine the winner. Thanks to Jacqueline's swim folder, the team quickly memorized another cheer (from the many cheers made up during last year's PCA Camp) and included some choreography to actually beat the Coyotes who recruited the Mokihana swimmers to join in on their cheer. Team PCA displayed true Aloha spirit by quickly sharing their winnings (delicious Kauai Kookies) with all who were there. Go PCA!!! The Coyotes' Coach was very impressed with Team PCA. After the swimming competition part was over, all the swimmers participated in the "largest fruit bob." Apples, oranges and a watermelon were dumped in the pool for all the swimmers to jump in and grab. Team PCA grabbed enough fruits to fill several shopping bags and shared the fruits with the local families attending the meet. Then it was off to the airport to catch a flight home for the very tired swimmers, parents and coach. Plan on attending this fun meet next year! Get a head start on the short course season!! | Community Service ~ Easter Egg Hunt Thank you to the PCA Ohana for coming out to help at the Annual Waiau Easter Egg Hunt. The swimmers had fun spreading the colorful eggs for all the kids to pick up and fill their baskets. Mother Nature made the swimmers work hard by blowing the eggs into the corners of the basketball court and even blowing some under the fence and outside the area. The swimmers had to "scramble" to get the eggs back onto the basketball court for all the kids to pick up. While The senior swimmers had fun throwing a football during their "egg-break," Swimmers 12 years old and under got in the hunt in hopes of winning the grand prize: two Ripsticks. fortunately for PCA, they will be sticking to swimming for now. It was great to see everyone having fun while helping to make this year's Waiau Easter Egg Hunt a success. Happy Easter! |
| ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual PCA Christmas Party "rocked" with performance by the PCA Rock Band, games and activities for kids and adults, an overflowing buffet table of delicious foods, and of course a visit by Mr. Santa with presents for all the good children. Thank you to all the families for the wonderfully delectable dishes.....one plate was not enough to try all the different foods. Plus, there was so much food that everyone was fortunate to take home a few containers of leftovers. Thank you to the senior swimmers for organizing the games and entertainment. Bravo to the wonderful emcee and the Santa helpers for a fabulous job done! The party began with a sugar cookie decorating
activity. The messy but sweet icing proved a bit difficult to stick
on the cookie decoratively, but everyone's creativity shined
through. The finished cookie masterpieces did not last long enough
on the plate as they were gobbled up immediately by their creators.
Some cookies were fortunate to have their pictures taken before their
short lives. After the endless buffet line of great food,
everyone was entertained by the PCA Rock Band. PCA totally
rocks!!! Then it was onto the games....the kids were pretty quick in
passing candy cane to candy cane, but the adults were not so fast in
passing the marshmallow from straw to straw and some shouts of "DQ" could
be heard. There were lots of smiles during the games, until it was
strategy time for the White Elephant game. The popular gift this
year proved to be the roadside emergency kit and the handcrafted
picnic/camp plate and utensil boxes. No mercy for a good useful
gift! The popular gifts traveled from adult to adult until the game
was over. Finally, Mr. Santa stopped by "local style" dressed in
ultra cool shorts to give all the children on his "good"
list a special present. Thank you Mr. Santa, Uncle B and
the PCA Ohana for helping to make another PCA event a fun and
memorable one. Happy Holidays! |
